Voice and chat that’s
lightweight.secure.open source.free.
Slate is for hanging out with your friends: calls, messages and servers. No email, no ads, no tracking.
On a Mac, Chromebook or phone?
Voice, DMs and servers
Calls, screen sharing, direct messages and group servers with voice channels. Everything you do with your friends every night.
Lightweight by design
The whole app is smaller than most photos. Open it in any browser and it’s ready instantly.
Private by default
Your device connects straight to your friends’ devices over encrypted connections. There’s no server keeping your messages.
Open source
Every line of Slate is public under the MIT license. Read it, check it, build on it.

Is Slate really free?
Yes. Calls, screen sharing, messages, servers and customization are free. Tokens are optional and unlock extras like Slate Pro.
How do tokens work?
In Slate, open Settings → Shop → Get tokens and pay with Stripe. Tokens go to your wallet, then you spend them in the Shop on passes and name styles. Your wallet is a key saved in your app, so copy it from the Shop if you want to use your tokens on another device.
How do I get help?
Email support@slatesetup.dev and we’ll get back to you.
Do I need an account?
No. You can skip it and just pick a name. An account (a username and password, no email) lets you log in on any device and keeps your friends, servers and tokens with you.
How does Slate keep things private?
Your device connects directly to your friends’ devices, and those connections are encrypted. To find each other, devices briefly use free public relays, which only pass along an encrypted introduction. Messages are stored on your devices, not on a Slate server.
How do I install it on Windows?
Press Download for Windows, unzip the file, and open Slate.exe. Windows may say “Windows protected your PC” because Slate is new; click More info, then Run anyway.
Why is the Windows download bigger than 70 KB?
The app itself is 70 KB. The Windows version also includes its own copy of a browser engine (Chromium, through Electron), so it works the same on every PC. If you’d rather skip that, open Slate in your browser or install it from there.
Can I use it on a Mac, Chromebook or phone?
Yes, in your browser. In Chrome or Edge you can install it as an app from the address bar. On a Mac in Safari, use File → Add to Dock. On iPhone, tap Share → Add to Home Screen.
What happens if my friend is offline?
Messages sync the next time you’re both online. Friend requests wait too, and go through when they open Slate.
My friend and I can’t connect.
Make sure you both have Slate open. Some school and work networks block direct connections; try home Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot.
